Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th in 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was born to both black and white parents. She grew up on her mom's side. Russell recalled how as a child she was not accepted by her peers because of the shade of her skin. Their parents were struggling financially, and were constantly in a state of flux, moving their homes sixteen times in order to pursue her father's profession. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there was always an opportunity for innovation, to design something new."As a child, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she desired to pursue a profession in ballet. Later, she wanted to be a painter. At eighteen, she took her first acting class, and finally found her place. She used the money she earned from work to purchase a car and drove off to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out her home was returned to work until she was able to earn enough to go back to the audition. This process continued for four years, until she was offered her first big television role.
